Child and Babysitting Safety (CABS) Certification & Training
Before a teenager takes their first babysitting job, they deserve more than a pep talk. The HSI Child and Babysitting Safety (CABS) program teaches young caregivers how to run a safe evening from start to finish: meeting parents, managing kids of different ages, responding to emergencies, and treating babysitting like the real job it is.
Who needs Child and Babysitting Safety (CABS) training?
Teens and preteens starting to babysit
CABS is built for first-time sitters who want real skills, not just enthusiasm, before they are alone with younger kids.
Parents of new babysitters
A trained sitter knows when to call you, when to call 911, and how to keep kids safe in between. That is peace of mind for everyone involved.
Scout troops and youth groups
CABS works well as a group activity, and the completion card is a credential teens can show families that hire them.
Schools, PTAs, and community centers
A single on-site session can prepare a whole class of future sitters at once, with no travel for families.
Certification details
Certifying body
CABS is an HSI (Health & Safety Institute) program, and CPR Metro delivers the official curriculum with certified instructors.
How long it lasts
The CABS certification card is valid for two years.
Same day cards
Each participant receives their card the same day, something concrete to show parents who are deciding who to trust with their kids.
What to expect at your on-site session
Setup
Your instructor arrives with infant manikins, activity supplies, and all course materials. Hosts only need to provide the room.
Instruction
Age-appropriate lessons on caregiving, safety, and the business side of babysitting, taught at a pace built for teens.
Hands-on practice
Practice with infant manikins and realistic role-play: feeding, holding, choking response, and what to do when an evening goes sideways.
Scenario review
Teens talk and walk through what they would do in common babysitting situations while the instructor coaches their decisions.
Cards issued
Completion cards go home with every participant the same day.
Group sizes and logistics
- Groups from 4 teens and up. Larger youth groups split into rotations so everyone handles the manikins.
- A classroom, community room, or living room with space to spread out works fine.
- After-school, evening, and weekend scheduling fits around school calendars.
- Hosting for a troop or club? One session can certify the whole group together.
