Bloodborne Pathogen (BBP) Certification & Training
If your employees could reasonably come into contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials at work, OSHA's bloodborne pathogens standard applies to your workplace. Our on-site BBP class gives your staff the protection knowledge the standard calls for, and gives you the same-day documentation to prove it.
Who needs Bloodborne Pathogen (BBP) training?
Employers covered by OSHA's general industry rules
OSHA requires bloodborne pathogens training for employees with reasonably anticipated occupational exposure, before they start the work and at regular intervals afterward.
Dental and medical office staff
Front desk, assisting, sterilization, and cleaning roles can all involve exposure risk, not just the clinicians.
Tattoo, piercing, and body art studios
Many jurisdictions expect documented BBP training as part of studio licensing or health department compliance.
Custodial, janitorial, and property teams
The people who clean up after an incident face some of the highest exposure risk in any building.
Childcare, school, and youth sports staff
Bloody noses and scraped knees are part of the job, and staff should know how to handle them without putting themselves at risk.
Certification details
Certifying body
Available through both AHA and HSI. Both align with the awareness-level training described in OSHA's bloodborne pathogens standard (29 CFR 1910.1030).
How long it lasts
OSHA expects bloodborne pathogens training to be repeated annually, so plan on a yearly refresher rather than the two-year cycle used for CPR.
Same day cards
Certificates are issued same day, with documentation your safety officer can drop straight into your exposure control records.
What to expect at your on-site session
Setup
BBP is classroom-friendly: your instructor arrives with all materials and demonstration supplies, and regular seating is enough.
Instruction
How bloodborne diseases actually spread, which fluids and situations carry risk, and how standard precautions keep you protected.
Hands-on practice
Safe glove removal, choosing the right protective equipment, and walking through a contamination cleanup the correct way.
Knowledge check
A short review confirms every participant understands exposure risks and the steps to take if an exposure happens.
Documentation
Same-day certificates plus a training roster formatted for your OSHA recordkeeping.
Group sizes and logistics
- Classroom or conference room seating is all that is required. BBP needs less open floor than our CPR courses.
- Groups from 4 to 50+. Large staffs can split across back-to-back sessions in the same visit.
- Frequently added to a CPR or First Aid visit so employees satisfy multiple requirements in one block of time.
- Evening and weekend sessions are available for shift-based teams.
