On-site training in Maryland, Washington DC & Northern Virginia
Wilderness First Aid (ASHI) Certification & Training
On a trail, help is not minutes away, it is hours. Wilderness First Aid teaches you to manage injuries and make smart evacuation calls when calling 911 is only the beginning of the response. We bring the full ASHI course to your troop, camp, or outdoor program so your whole leadership team trains together.
Who needs Wilderness First Aid (ASHI) training?
Scout leaders and trek crews
Scouting organizations commonly require Wilderness First Aid for backcountry treks and high-adventure trips, and on-site delivery certifies multiple leaders before the season starts.
Summer camp staff and outdoor educators
Camps operating beyond immediate EMS response rely on WFA-trained staff as their first line of medical care.
Hiking, paddling, and climbing clubs
The farther your group gets from the trailhead, the more the trip leader becomes the medical plan.
Field crews and remote-site workers
Surveying, conservation, and utility work in remote areas carries the same far-from-help risks as recreation, with an employer's duty of care on top.
Certification details
Certifying body
Certified through ASHI (American Safety & Health Institute, part of HSI), a credential widely recognized by scouting and outdoor programs.
How long it lasts
Your ASHI Wilderness First Aid certification is valid for two years.
Same day cards
Cards are issued same day at the end of the course, so leaders heading out on an upcoming trip have their credential in hand.
What to expect at your on-site session
Format
WFA is a multi-day course, typically run across two days, that blends classroom sessions with outdoor scenario work.
Instruction
Patient assessment systems, improvised care, and environmental emergencies, taught for settings where your equipment is whatever is in your pack.
Scenario practice
Realistic outdoor scenarios where you find, assess, treat, and monitor patients with limited supplies and no ambulance on the way.
Skills evaluation
You demonstrate assessment and treatment decisions across scenarios so the instructor can verify you are trip-ready.
Cards issued
Same-day ASHI certification cards at the end of the final session.
Group sizes and logistics
- We need an indoor classroom space plus access to outdoor ground (a yard, field, or wooded area) for scenarios.
- Groups from 4 and up. Larger cohorts split into scenario teams so everyone plays rescuer and patient.
- Weekend two-day formats are the most popular choice for volunteer leaders and seasonal staff.
- Camps and councils often schedule WFA just before the season so certifications cover the full two-year cycle ahead.
